3 Baking Soda Recipes to Burn Belly Fat

Baking soda is often promoted online as a simple ingredient that can supposedly “burn belly fat,” flatten the stomach, or speed up weight loss. Some viral recipes mix it with lemon, apple cider vinegar, or plain water and claim that taking it regularly can melt abdominal fat.

Those claims go much further than the evidence.

Baking soda does not directly burn belly fat. Weight loss depends mainly on overall calorie balance, diet quality, physical activity, sleep, and long-term habits. Baking soda may affect stomach acidity, but that is very different from reducing body fat.

Here are three popular baking-soda recipes—and what they can and cannot realistically do.

1. Baking Soda and Lemon Water

One common recipe combines baking soda with lemon juice and water.

Typical mixture
1 glass of water
A squeeze of fresh lemon
A small pinch of baking soda

The mixture fizzes because the acid in lemon reacts with sodium bicarbonate.

Does it burn fat?

No.

The bubbling reaction may look impressive, but it does not trigger fat burning in the body.

Lemon water can help some people drink more fluids, and replacing sugary drinks with plain or lightly flavored water may indirectly support weight management. But the baking soda itself does not melt abdominal fat.

Important caution

Lemon is acidic, while baking soda is alkaline. Mixing them changes the acidity of the drink, but it does not create a special “fat-burning” compound.

People with reflux, kidney disease, high blood pressure, or sodium restrictions should be especially careful with baking soda.

2. Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar
